Gogol changed his name to Nikhil and seems to have adopted a new lifestyle. Has his identity changed? He has three homes: one in the studio apartment by himself, one with Maxine, Gerald, and Lydia at their 5 story house in Chelsea, and one with his family at Pemberton Road. Where do you think he belongs most? Has he even found a place to belong?
Gogol changed his name to Nikhil to make himself feel comfortable when he is called by his peers. I do not believe this depicts a change off identity because Gogol is still addressed as Gogol by his family and even the narrator. Therefore Nikhil is still Gogol, but a more free and independent Gogol. Gogol will associate Maxine's home as his home also because he feels belong there because Maxine and her parents allow him to express himself freely. He also loves Maxine with all his heart so wherever she will be the place he would want to call home.
ReplyDeleteI think Gogol's identity has changed because he hated his name with a passion and now that his name has changed got changed i think thats when some of his culture was taken away from him a little like his family was taken away from him since his father came up with the name Gogol. I think he fits in the most at the 5 story home because he is comfortable around his friends. but he doesnt fully belong there. He has not found a place where he really fits at all like completely. He doesnt like to be lonely and for him being with his family hes been distant so he wouldnt really fit there.

"Quickly and simultaneously he falls in love with maxine and the house" (pg. 137). He loves Maxine with all his heart so wherever she will be the place he would want to call home.
